Dry Eye Tips for the Winter

Dry Eye

If you have dry eye during the winter, you're not alone. Many people are susceptible to developing dry eye during this time of year. This can cause a lot of discomfort and you need to get an eye exam to have the problem examined. There are more treatments today than ever before for patients with dry eye. If you live in or around Bellaire, TX, and are experiencing dry eye, contact Eye Wellness Center to schedule an appointment with one of our eye doctors. Let’s look at a few tips for dealing with dry eye.

Adjust the Heat

The air in winter is at its driest of the year. This can cause the tear film on the outside of your eye to dry out too much for your comfort. The resulting condition will make your eyes feel dry and irritated and they may turn red or even water. Because of the dry air, it's important not to have too much heat blowing on you. Running the heat in your home will dry out your eyes faster. Also, be sure to make sure that when the heat is running, the vents aren't facing you. Adjust where the vents point or where you sit in your home.

Add Moisture

The dry air can cause dry eye or make it much worse. Using a humidifier in your home can help make the air less dry. When there is more moisture in your home's air, your tear film won't dry out as fast, leaving your eyes more comfortable. You can also use over-the-counter eye drops to your eyes to add moisture to your eyes quickly for some relief. If your eyes are painful or irritated, you can wet a cloth with warm water and hold it to your eyes for a few minutes to add moisture.

Other Treatments

At our optometry office, we may recommend additional treatments to help alleviate your dry eye symptoms. These additional treatments include beaded heat mask, omega fatty acid supplementation, and nighttime ophthalmic ointment in eyes.
