The human eye has everything needed for protection, flexibility and operation to translate light into images for the brain. One of the key features of the eye is the ability to produce tears. Primarily water, these tears also contain organic oils and mucus. Both lubricate the eye under the eyelid.
Dry eye syndrome develops when the tear ducts and glands become plugged or fail to produce sufficient tears with the right ingredients. This condition is diagnosed by identifying symptoms such as burning eyes, red eyes, irritation, a feeling of grit in the eyes, and more. Ironically, watery eyes are also a problem. The eye's tear systems try to produce more tears, but are missing the correct ingredients, so water alone doesn't help relieve the symptoms.
The first step in any eye condition involves an eye exam. Our eye doctor will review the person's condition, and provide a full physical exam of the patient's eyes. This often confirms the issue, but the eye doctor can then narrow down if an external issue, such as contact lenses, a tear duct malfunction, or an infection, is causing the dry eye. Burning and red eyes can be symptoms of many issues, even eye contamination, such as blepharitis. Heavy watery eyes are also common with allergies.
If you are diagnosed with dry eye syndrome, natural eye drops, and cold compresses can help with mild cases. An eye infection requires cleaning the eye and removing contaminants. If contacts cause it, the optometrist may recommend a different type of contacts that decreases irritation and allows proper airflow to the eye.
