Diplopia Clinic

Diplopia/ double vision

There can be many causes of double vision. Varying reasons can include  corneal infections,  corneal distortion, dry eye syndrome, and post-refractive correction.

Eye muscles and nerves not working corectly such as in thyroid eye disease, strokes, tumors, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, or cranial nerve palsies. Many different severe disease processes can cause double vision which is why it is best to find a provider with extensive training in this oftentimes neuro ophthalmic condition.

Double vision is treated in our clinic through a variety of modalities depending upon the cause. We use specialized prisms in many cases to correct the doubling. The examnation is different than a routine eye exam and includes careful measuring of the defect, and a sensory motor examination.

Convergence insufficiency

Ci  is the inabilty to maintain binocular function (the two eyes working together) while working at a near distance. Typically, one eye will turn outward (intermittent exotropia) when focusing on a word or object at near. (aapos.org)

Convergence insufficiency  is oftentimes missed in patients at school vision screenings and some routine eye exams, particularly children with otherwise normal vision and normal vision acuities (i.e. 20/20). If it remains unidentified and untreated, it may result in significant learning difficulties, headaches, eyestrain and fatigue.

Treatment can consist of vision therapy, prisms  and/ or corrective lenses, and sometimes in severe cases  surgery.  Treatment significantly improves  a patient’s quality of life.
